The minute we saw Gus my husband and I knew we he was the dog for us. He had just come from a shelter and had the most sorrowful eyes. The Empty Shelter Project worked with him for a little over two weeks before we adopted him. This group of dog lovers is a gift for the unwanted canines in Northern Virginia. They care for the dogs as if they were their own. Because of all the love and care from them, Gus had an easy time transitioning to us. Gus and our other two dogs get along well. He is a ham for the camera and all of our neighbors. Gus is always up for a belly rub or a nap with his new dad. It’s like he has been here all along.
Calliope formerly Little Bit
I just wanted to say thank you again for what your rescue does. Little Bit (who went as Maggie for a few days and now is officially Calliope Jane) is a wonderful addition to our home. She fits in perfectly with her crazy then lazy attitude. We all already love her so much. (Okay maybe not the cats. She likes to chase them down then lick them, but they were getting a little arrogant about their family role and needed to be knocked down a few notches anyhow. ) As you can see in the photos she has adapted well into our home and made it her own. Thank you providing the amazing service that you do for all of the amazing animals needing homes, and thank you for giving us the opportunity to give Calliope a forever home.
Attached are several pictures of “Luis”. He loves to take walks, ride in a car and play fetch in the backyard. We are so glad we adopted Luis!

Fox, comfortably snuggled next to the Christmas tree at his new home.
I just wanted to let you know how much we love Fritz. He is such a joy to have. Thank you for letting us bring this special baby into our home. Here’s a photo of him in the snow. –Heather
Hi there! I just wanted to let you know that otis is doing very well. He is good on the leash and is starting to respond to the ‘come’ command. He is so sweet and quiet and has been a total joy! I gave him a bath tonight, he was not a fan but he did great. Thank you for everything! I’ll send more pictures later. –Elizabeth
Here are some pictures of Georgia…with her “sister’ Helen, with “brother” Trouble ( they are getting along just fine!) and waiting much more patiently then her “little brothers” Trouble and Polar for dinner. She is a love, and we are so fortunate to have her. She has adjusted extremely well to her “forever” home …everyone falls instantly in love with her. –Maureen
When we agreed to foster Jilly I had no intentions of falling in love and keeping her, but you know how that goes. She charmed us. She’s such a lovebug and a great addition to our family! –Amber
Astra & Josie
They took to each other the very first day. As big as Astra is she is pretty gentle with Josie. They even get a little rough, but mostly Josie gets a wet head. They act like sisters.
Exactly one year ago, a little before 7pm, ESP brought Lucky to my home for a foster to adopt. Although we did a 6 week trail, the end result was, a new addition to our family. He has brought such joy to our life, I now understand the saying, ‘who rescued who?’ When Lucky came to us he was afraid of everything, even his own shadow. Now, he is a confident and well rounded dog that he was meant to be. In this past year, Lucky has made HUGE accomplishments. First, he got his Canine Good Citizen award. Now, we are shooting for his first Rally-o novice award. He loves going to rally and obedience class, and has made many friends. I am so grateful for ESP and wanted to give you his one year update. Attached is a picture of Lucky and I a few weeks ago. –Kendra
Charlie (Vixen) & Kimo (Gunner)
She is an absolute delight….cats are getting to know her and she is so accepting and tolerant of them. Thanks for what you do!!!! Kimo – formerly known as Gunner – has been reunited with his sister Charlie. He had an exciting day of shopping, car rides, getting to know his new neighbors, new furever home and getting a bath. Real sweet boy and surprised he was not adopted sooner! — Mark
We’ve had Max for a month today and love him to pieces! He is such a sweet and happy dog. Thanks for all the work you do so great dogs can have the loving homes they deserve! –Tracey
Thank you so much for Roxy (now Jozy!) She’s right at home and we are in love! She even appreciates a lazy Saturday –Heather
“I saw this sweet face when we (ESP) recently went to pull dogs from a high kill shelter. I knew we could not leave without her. I brought her back to my home to foster her until we found her a home. But I fell in love with this lil bug. She fit in perfectly with the rest of my pack so I decided to adopt her. She makes my heart smile every time she snuggles into my lap to take a nap. I’m so happy that she was my foster fail.” –DeAnne
